Road to nowhere – stadium so far out of the town it's almost in another…

Kingsford is the wrong site. Miles from city centre and here is the evidence. The distance between the city centre and Aberdeen’s stadium proposals is more than twice the distance of any other club in Scotland. The distance between the city it serves and the stadium is greater than nearly any other club in Europe. And that’s before you consider there is no transport infrastructure to support it. So how far do fans travel? Paul Fletcher, who worked with AFC on their plans for Loirston Loch and has also delivered stadium projects for Huddersfield Town, Bolton and the new Wembley Stadium, in an interview with FourFourTwo, says “I’ve realised that there’s a distance that fans won’t travel and I think that’s about two miles out of a town centre.” So, how far are Scotland’s stadia from their city/town centres? This handy table of walking distances (from Google Maps) will tell you for the current teams in both the Premiership and the Championship.  It’s also worth noting that the larger stadia (Celtic Park,  Ibrox and others) have over-ground / underground railway stations relatively close by (as does Hampden, the national football stadium).  Murrayfield in Edinburgh is also serviced by trains (Haymarket – a short 1 mile walk) and trams to the door.

The average walking distance from a city/town centre to a Scottish football ground is 1.3 miles for the two top tiers.  The proposed Kingsford site is 6.7 miles from Aberdeen City centre and has no supporting transport infrastructure (no trams, no trains and no plans for any either). To get the application through the city council, the club engineered a Bus Shuttle Strategy that everyone knows is unworkable and cannot realistically be delivered.  We’ll post something covering this strategy in more detail shortly. It makes no sense to put a stadium so far from the city when there are already two identified sites for the development in local plans: Kings Links, in the heart of the city (which already has a viable business case) and Loirston Loch (which was granted planning consent).  Just another reason Kingsford is so wrong for the community, supporters and the city.
